Debunked

Does having sex induce labor during pregnancy?

Pleasurably speaking, we give pregnancy sex two enthusiastic thumbs up.

Scientifically speaking, it’s a little more complicated.

Myth: Having sex induces labor.

Debunked: For labor to begin, there are hormonal exchanges that need to occur in the body to start contractions. One of those hormones is oxytocin also known as the “love hormone.” You know that warm and fuzzy feeling that happens when you see puppies, fall in love or in this case have an orgasm.

And speaking of orgasms, we checked in with the “pregnancy pleasure queen” herself, Debra-Pascali Bonaro, world renowned ChildBirth Educator, birth doula and author of “Orgasmic Birth” - oh yes, it’s a thing!

“Pleasurable Sex during pregnancy is wonderful to flood your body with Oxytocin the hormone of love, calm and connection. Unless you are told by a health care provider not to engage in sexual intercourse or orgasm due to a risk of preterm birth,  sex will not start labor until you and your baby are truly ready.  Sex, intimacy and orgasm are healthy ways to enjoy your changing body, reduce stress and to prepare for an Orgasmic Birth.”

Our conclusion: Get. It. On.
