On Fatherhood
Dr. Olufemi Sonubi is a physical therapist and soon-to-be-father. We caught up with him to ask what he thinks it will be like to make the big jump into fatherhood.
Products We Love
This month, we gave ourselves a special mission: to bring together some of our favorite products and services from black-owned prenatal, postpartum and baby companies. From natural handmade teethers to t-shirts that will make you smile, we’ve got you (and your baby) covered.
Founder’s Note
Not only did we celebrate Mother’s Day in quarantine this month, but we also celebrated Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week, which is critical in any year, but especially this year. Here at Poppy Seed Health we know that too often our mental health is questioned and dismissed. When we asked mamas from around the country to submit stories, we heard your struggles, joys, and mishaps loud and clear: You told us about your anxiety. About feeling helpless. About asking yourself the question: “Shouldn’t I know what to do?”
Spotlight: Interview with Sarah Menkedick
For Maternal Mental Health Awareness week, we connected with one of our favorite writers, Sarah Menkedick, whose new book, published last month, includes interviews with hundreds of women about the silent epidemic of anxiety and fear impacting new mothers.
In Your Own Words
I was heart set on a natural birth with my first one - I'd hired a very well-respected doula, took my husband through birthing classes and even watched videos about "orgasmic birthing" (apparently it REALLY is a thing??).
Founder’s Note
Not to get too meta here, but, have you ever thought about why we refer to the Earth as “Mother Earth?” I have, a lot, actually, as we prepared for this month’s newsletter to celebrate Earth Day.
I’ve come to the conclusion that we inherently connect the ability to grow and carry life, nurture, protect, nourish and comfort to motherhood…
Spotlight: COVID-19 Maternal Health Heroes: Kayla Preston, RN
This week we donated 100 shield masks to Ryan Health Women’s and Children on 99th & Amsterdam in Manhattan, which has been serving uninsured and underserved communities since 1971. It was a modern day game of “telephone” that started with our founder, Simmone, sending her weekly “are-you-hanging-in-there” Sunday text to a friend and within 24 hours bringing the resources of the community together to deliver precious PPE masks that ended up with Nurse Kayla at Ryan Health.
Rainbow Mama
Whitney Robinson, a product manager and health tech guru, is on a mission to tackle the maternal mortality crisis for women of color. After suffering a pregnancy loss seven years ago, she launched The Renée, a series of “jam sessions,” where women of color can “hack their pregnancies.”
In Your Own Words
Tanya and Daniel were prepared for anything after spending years trying to conceive but nothing could have prepared them for a pandemic sweeping the world. Their baby was born just 72 hours short of New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo giving the executive order, which allowed support partners back into the hospital, so Tanya birthed alone, while her husband watched on WhatsApp.
Products We Love: Esembly, Sustainable Diapering System
Liz Turrigiano, co-founder and CEO of Esembly, a sustainable diapering system, answers our burning questions about saving landfills and saving you money on diapers and more.
Founders Note
There are pivotal times in history when making the decision to move forward through uncertain times has resulted in humanity coming together to protect the most vulnerable communities.
There are also times when the historical moments are private and isolating, where no one is swooping in to protect us from unprecedented times such as the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
Mamas We Love: Amy Nelson, Founder of The Riveter
Amy Nelson, Founder of The Riveter, a co-working company, which now has 10 locations in seven states and is opening in New York, Atlanta, and D.C. next year, is also a mom to four young girls all under the age of five. We caught her just as she landed in Minnesota and she was pumping for her five-month old baby girl!
Write Your (Push) Life - Virtual Edition
Our Editorial Director, Ruthie Ackerman, wrote a piece this week for Oprah Magazine about being pregnant during the coronavirus pandemic. Lucky for us she’s offering her next 6-week class virtually (and she’s also offering a sliding scale scholarship option).
Rainbow Mama
Lia Buffa De Feo, the founder of Fly Bravely, has been through more than any human should have to endure. She’s the mother of a stillborn son who died when her uterus ruptured at 31 weeks. Despite the trauma of her loss, Lia and her husband decided to try again: this time using a surrogate.
What We’re Watching
We didn’t even know we needed this video until we watched it.
‘Call Your Mother’ was released in celebration of Women’s History Month and honors African women by delving into topics of love, freedom, style, identity and more, through intimate phone conversations between a group of Black millennial women and their mothers.
In Your Own Words
I had a nearly idyllic pregnancy and delivery; for that I am extremely grateful. Things went so well that I was commuting to work by train all the way up to the week before I gave birth.
Products We Love: Lilu, Hands-Free Pumping Bra with Built-In Breast Massage
Be kind to yourself - there's so many variables and factors that impact breastfeeding - physical, emotional, and nutritional. It's hard, and it's ok to take it one week, one day, or even one feeding session at a time
